Police report cites stuck accelerator as possible cause of Louisville accident
(WHAS11) - A stuck accelerator on a Toyota Camry may have caused one crash locally. One man is in serious condition tonight at University Hospital after that crash.
Saturday evening, the driver of a new Camry was trying to park when, according to his statement, the car wouldn't stop. He said while he had two feet on the brake, the vehicle jumped an embankment and flipped over.
The new Camry flipped over and landed in an icy creek below. Todd Allen, a passenger in that vehicle is serious condition at University Hospital.
According to the driver, David Allen, he was trying to park and the vehicle wouldn't stop.
Three passengers in the car at the time of the wreck may verify the statement he gave to police, that he had both feet on the brake but the vehicle continued to move forward. And witnesses in the parking lot of Cox's Smokers Outlet told police they could hear the vehicle accelerating while it was in the parking space and then watched as the new Camry tumbled over the snow bank and in to the icy water below.
In the police reports, it says police officers detected that the front wheels of the vehicle dug into the snow bank as if the accelerator was stuck.
Toyota of Louisville may not have sold the vehicle to Allen, but is assisting customers who are driving Toyota’s on the recall list.
Monday morning, Toyota announced it would begin fixing accelerators on eight models with a steel reinforcement bar keeps the gas pedal from sticking. Moisture may be the leading cause of this rare occurrence. Also, the pedal that gets caught in floor mats will be replaced. It is about a 30 minute fix.
Toyota has apologized to its customers and it is customers who will come first, then the autos at the dealerships will be fixed. Toyota in Georgetown will begin manufacturing those autos on the recall list Monday.
Toyota is covering all repair costs and Toyota of Louisville plans to have extended hours to make sure that all vehicles are fixed.
According to Toyota, all owners of one of the affected vehicles will receive a notice in the mail this week or you can find a complete list here: http://www.toyota.com/recall/?srchid=K610_p228906387
