Basically the insurance company at their own proposal, based on estimate from appraiser who looks at your car, decide if it's worth doing repair. If they decides total, they will tell you how much they will give you, and will ask you if you still want to keep it, maybe $600. If you want to keep it, they will give you the car, but deduct this $600 from the original payout amount. If you choose not, they will just give the total amount, and assign a junk yard to take the car from you. At that point, you are done.
