First of all, I think the belt you saw when you opened the hood was not the timing belt, it might be the sept belt which controled your steering, water pump, A/C, etc. The timing belt I think is covered inside the engine somewhere. I think you should ask a qualified/certified car repair person about whether you have to change the timing belt or not.
