Battery light on in the instrument panel indicates a battery charging problem. If you can still start the engine now without any problem, you more likely have a problem in the alternator rather than the battery. If you have a bad battary, you won't be able to start the engine.

If I were you, I will ask the tech to check the charging system in addition to the battery. A fully charged battary can start engine for a week or so, but eventually, the battary will be drained, and could not start the engine any more. Once the engine starts, it only takes very little power to maintain the spark to keep the engine running (but headlights draw large current as well).
