Strut replacement Question

My Audi A6 has a rough ride on the front passenger side. I think it is a strut problem. I went to Audozone yesterday ask for the part. They give me a cartridge. Has somebody replaced cartridge of strut before? Can I replace it from top without take off the whole strut? What is the recommended torque of the bolt?
