fluid yourself or have the mechanic do it?

I am thinking that maybe I need to purchase a book on basic car maintenance. My hu*****and said he did not know where to check for ATF level. The manual did not cover that. I did not ask if he knew where the air filter was. I think maybe it's time for me to start learning some basic information about cars.
