If you want a slightly lower class, look at VW Passat TDI, which is a very nice car and great gas mileage. Further down would be Jetta TDI, around 40 mpg, about $25000, but it has hard suspension, not sure you'll like it.

Why I recommended diesels? There are many positive sides, of course it has negative too. One thing for sure, you wouldn't need to worry about the car stopping at middleware of highways. As a diesel, once it is started, it will be going and going, tirelessly...
