Let me share my experience, (other people may have different needs). I have a minivan and a sedan. But I find that we drive sedan most of time even at weekend.
Home Depot: Most time I go to home depot, things I bought can fit into my car. Sometimes (maybe less than once a year), I need bigger stuff, more often than not, it does not fit into minivan as well (even with last two row seats removed). So I just rent a truck from home depot.
Furniture: Same as home depot, less than once a year, I need a delivery. The only thing I feel inconvenience is that some small furniture that is too small for delivery, too big for sedan. In this case, a hatchback can be a better choice.
Kids: depends on what sports they are playing. Our kids are still young, all they needed are soccer, tennis and baseball, which really not cost too much space. I have no problem to get three kids in my car for a short trip.
In-laws: we mainly bought minivan for our in-laws. But it turns out they don't really like to go out with us too much. I understand many people may have a need every weekend. But for me, I have no problem with driving two cars.
The only time I think minivan is really useful is long distance travel. We always go out with minivan. But I think rental car will be just fine if we do not have minivan.
Let me share my experience
