Lead acid battery in every car is far more poisonous than hybrid battery. If you are worried about environment impact of hybrid battery, you should spend more time worry about lead acid battery you replaced every 3-5 years. And as most prius sold in 2000 are still running on their original battery, your 5-year estimate is not quite accurate either.

By the way, would you mind to share your advisor's name so I may read his publication? If he is world expert on battery technology, he must be a well-known figure in the field.
