Disabled check engine light.Still need repairs?Thanks

Thanks to Da Xia Meng who gave me good suggestions regarding my check engine light. Autozone doesn't do free check any more but they gave me another shop Aamco. They did a free diagnosic check and said my engine is fine. They said it's a smog related problem most likely I needed a new O2 sensor as Da Xia Meng had told me. They asked me to go to a smog check station. A mechanic there did a computer check for me but not the smog test. He disabled my engine check light and asked me to drive at least 50 miles. If the light doesn't come on, I can go back for the smog test. In this case, do I still need to repair the O2 sensor? He said if the light is off, then no need to fix it.
