中日美暗暗緩解？

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met Chinese President Xi Jinping for the second time in less than six months on Wednesday.

The meeting was just half an hour long, shorter than the usual one-hour diplomatic gatherings, observed The New York Times. But it was still a sign of thawing relations.

The Chinese said Shinzo Abe, who was eager to show US President Barack Obama of better relations with China ahead of his US trip, requested the meeting. The New York Times’s Jane Perlez reported:

The encounter in Jakarta, the second in the last five months between Mr. Xi and Mr. Abe, was not mentioned beforehand by the Chinese state-run news media, an apparent attempt to play down the meeting’s significance. The Chinese news media later reported that the meeting was held at the request of Japan.

A Chinese expert on Japan said on Wednesday that Mr. Abe was most likely anxious to meet Mr. Xi in order to reassure the Obama administration.

“Abe wants to tell Obama that, ‘I want to relax the tensions with China, I’m not a troublemaker in the relations with China and South Korea,’ ” said the expert, Huang Dahui, dean of the department of diplomacy at Renmin University.

Understandably, the US wants China, South Korea and Japan to get along, because they have a common big threat - North Korea.

The Wall Street Journal reported that China recently warned the U.S. of North Korea’s nuclear capabilities and was worried that U.S. underestimated the troublemaker. Colleagues Jeremy Page and Jay Solomon wrote:

The latest Chinese estimates, relayed in a closed-door meeting with U.S. nuclear specialists, showed that North Korea may already have 20 warheads.

Recent estimates by U.S. experts range from 10 to 16 nuclear bombs today.

“They believe on the basis of what they’ve put together now that the North Koreans have enough enriched uranium capacity to be able to make eight to 10 bombs’ worth of highly enriched uranium per year,” said Mr. Hecker, who added that estimates by China and the U.S. involved a great deal of guesswork.

Relations between North Korea and China have deteriorated since Xi Jinping became China’s leader in 2012 and North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, took power following the death of his father in late 2011.

不過如果緩解的原因是朝鮮（朝核），這緩解是假的。不過安倍的報道挺逗，安倍的苦衷，壓力不必習近平差。
