"Amazing Grace" is one of the most recognisable songs in the English-speaking world. American historian Gilbert Chase writes that it is "without a doubt the most famous of all the folk hymns",
and Jonathan Aitken, a Newton biographer, estimates that the song is performed about 10 million times annually.
It has had particular influence in folk music, and has become an emblematic black spiritual. Its universal message has been a significant factor in its crossover into secular music.
"Amazing Grace" became newly popular during the 1960s revival of American folk music, and it has been recorded thousands of times during and since the 20th century.

Amazing grace! how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch; like me!
I once was lost, but now am ( ),
Was blind, but now I see.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved ;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first ( )!
The Lord hath promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s ( )
Than when we first begun.
