Learn A Word: Purgatory

One day during my last trip to the south east Asia, we needed the password in order to access WiFi in the local office. When our local counterpart told us the password "Purgatory", I noticed that my partner seemed rather shocked.

After I entered it in my laptop and set it up successfully, my partner still looked gloomy. So I asked my partner whether everything was okay. He said gravely, "Purgatory is hell."

"Wait a minute," I said to him, "I'm not so sure."

I quickly searched the definition in Wiktionary, and it turned out that purgatory means "the stage of the afterlife where souls suffer for their sins before they can enter heaven." I showed it to my partner and he was much relieved - although there will be suffering, purgatory is nevertheless a pathway to heaven.
