今天我們要講的兩個習慣用語所描繪的境地想必是誰都不想置身其中的，因為它們說的都是難以脫身的險境。

第一個習慣用語是: behind the eight ball。 Behind the eight ball，這個習慣用語來自台球。這是兩個人擊打在綠絨台麵球桌上的彩色硬球的遊戲。參加者用球竿擊打白色母球，母球分別撞擊十五個彩球，使它們掉進球桌的球囊內。

彩色台球上有一到十五的編號。有一種玩法是必須按照編號順序把球擊入球囊，但是黑色的八號球，也就是eight ball例外。 Eight ball得最後被擊入球囊。即使是打出的母球過早碰撞了eight ball，打球的人也得失分，甚至會輸。

要是在打球的時候你的母球不巧正滾到eight ball背後，也就是behind the eight ball，那你就凶多吉少了。

大約在1920年左右behind the eight ball被人們廣泛用來描述任何得勝希望渺茫的境況。我們來聽個例子。他說到一個職業足球隊的教練，因為他的球隊前四個賽季以來一而再，再而三地輸，而從今年起他的球隊又已經一連串輸了五場比賽。他的處境如何可想而知:

例句-1：Coach Jones is behind the eight ball this season. He's got to win more than he loses or he'll get fired for sure, and the team has already lost the first five.

他說：Jones教練這個賽季處於岌岌可危的境地。他務必贏多輸少才行，否則他一定會被解雇，更何況他的球隊已經輸了頭五場比賽。

這段話裏的behind the eight ball意思是處境岌岌可危的。

習慣用語behind the eight ball常常用來說緊迫的經濟拮據局麵，比方說在下麵的例子裏:

例句-2：My friend Pete has been out of work six months and he's really behind the eight ball. He’s used up his savings and can't pay his rent or the payments he owes on his car.

他說：我的朋友Pete失業有六個月了，可真是山窮水盡。他已經用完了手頭所有積蓄，連欠的房租和汽車貸款都付不出了。

這裏的behind the eight ball意思是手頭拮據的。

我們再學個意義相近的習慣用語: up the creek。 Creek是溪流，以前這個習慣用語是up the creek without a paddle。 Paddle是槳，可以想象如果有人乘小船逆流而上手頭卻沒有槳，處境該有多難。使用這個習慣用語的人很快就省略了without a paddle，隻是說up the creek來表達同樣的意思。我們聽個例子來體會它的含義吧。這是個小夥子在說他跟女朋友Mary的關係陷於僵局。

例句-3：I'm sure up the creek with Mary. I took this new girl in the office out to dinner just to get acquainted. And Mary happened to see us. Now she won't even answer my calls.

他帶辦公室新來的女孩出去吃飯，其實隻想彼此熟悉一下，但是讓Mary撞見,這可惹出麻煩來了，現在Mary連他的電話都不肯接。

所以他說: I’m sure up the creek with Mary.

意思是我和Mary真是處於僵局。Up the creek意思是處於僵局的，或者陷於困境的。

我們再聽個例子。這回說話的是個自討苦吃的大學生。他一心貪玩，學習鬆懈，成績直線下降，以致保不住減免學費的獎學金了。我們聽聽他的尷尬處境

例句-4：I sure had a good time last semester - I didn't have much time to study. But now I'm up the creek; I certainly don't have the tuition money and I hate to ask dad to pay it.

他說：我上學期玩兒得可真痛快，簡直沒時間念書了。 但是現在我可進退兩難了：我自己當然沒錢交學費，而我實在不願意向爸爸開口要。

這裏的up the creek用來描繪進退兩難的困境。
