You can apply up to six months extension. However, whether or not your application will be approved is based on officer's sole discretion.

Frankly speaking, it's very hard, especially within 180 days after you enter US holding vistor's visa. According to regulations, you had better tell the visa officer the truth that you may seek transfering your visa status from vistor to student once you enter US when you apply your vistor visa in US' embassey in Japan.
