We got ours on a single lane hwy with a rather wide shoulder - so we were "educated" by the police officer when we tried to explain that the big truck with a big boat on tow was tailgating us on the downhill... The cop said you can always pull over to the shoulder even on a single lane... He did not forget to remind us 3 times including the last one to send us on our way...

This is the first ticket we ever got after decades of driving long distance...so just pay up.

Besides, it is a rental and if we dont pay, they may send the ticket to the rental car company and it would probably involve even more expenses (rental car company would charge an admin fee as they have to track you down from their records).
