USA kaleidoscope reflecting Nations bad, good, ugly Tai-pan

USA kaleidoscopic Tai-Pan reflecting on nations—bad, good, and ugly—all came to the USA. Whatever happens outside of the US, it reflects here as the "Taipan" of all nations living here in the US.

It's 1842 and a battle is raging between imperialist England and the port city of Hong Kong. British merchants regularly buy opium from Chinese merchants and sell it back to them at higher prices, which enrages the locals. The powerful British forces quickly quell a Chinese uprising and take over the city, inspiring the ambitious Dirk Struan (Bryan Brown) to become its leader. Dirk finds himself pitted against the unscrupulous Tyler Brock (John Stanton) in his quest to rule Hong Kong.

Is Taipan a true story?

This is not a historical tome. It is a fictionalized account of the first year of the British colony of Hong Kong (1841). The characters are all loosely based on actual people - as are their trading companies. That is what Clavell did in his novels and it's important that one understand that.
