1. Contact the hospital and found out what is the real bill. Hospital accounting office may have details. Then, discuss with case manage and social worker. Let them know that the family has financial difficulties. Most case they will waiver some of the charge. If both side can reach a reasonable price the family may consider pay some of it such as a monthly bill $20 or something affordable. I have a friend (not Chinese) her son was sick. She brought him to a university hospital ED and stayed overnight. The bill was over $20K. She is not that poor but not reach. She told them she can not afford it. After long negociation the bill was cut to 2K. She agreed to pay $20 per month. Hospital agreed.
2. If can not reach agreement and the bill is too high just ignore it. Many poor American do not pay their hospital bill. There is nothing hospital can do. They report you to collection agency or credit agency. As long as you are not live in USA who cares.
