You should check if the other party made turn on green or on yellow. Normally, A car waiting for left green arrow will not start until the driver see the gree arrow. If that were true, then you might enter the intersection too late even if the light was still yellow. If the other side turned to yellow at the same time as your side, then you might have the chance to defense.

do you remember how far away from the intersection when you saw the yellow light. The best driving habit is to estimate if you could pass the intersection in two seconds; Here pass means you cross 2/3 of the intersection.
