過去傳統中醫，很少用靈芝，但都用陶罐子（近代用玻璃罐）存幾株。
碰到大戶人家，有絕症的，“鋸”一點碾碎，或“木銼”拉下點屑，下藥，換金子（真金啊，銀子都不好意思給）。
這錢不能亂花，隻用於采購新的靈芝，和接濟付不起藥錢的窮人。
這種做法，源於“靈”字。過去認為靈芝集山水之精，草木之靈，多年生品相上佳的稱為“芝馬”，能跑掉的。
古人記載：“名山生神芝、不死之草。上芝為車馬，中芝為人，下芝為六畜”
非常人所及，更非俗人可用。
如今之靈芝，均為人工養植，哪裏有天地之靈氣。
