中國古代的妓女、尤其是清代以前的妓女，在中國古代的文藝發展史上占有一定的地位，從而形成了一種“妓女文化”現象。一些家妓、官妓（也包括極少數市妓）則是所處時代歌舞音樂藝術的代表，在推動中國古代藝術發展方麵起了重要作用。
這樣說，並不是在歌頌賣淫。“妓”在後世專指賣淫女子，而“妓”原是從“伎（技）”演化而來，“伎”是指專習歌舞等技藝的女藝人。中國古代如此，日本的古代和現代都是如此。所以在古代，“妓”是娼妓與女藝人二者的統稱。二者有區別，但有時也很近似，賣身者有時要賣藝，而賣藝者有時也要賣身。
曆史上記載的著名女舞蹈家很多。如漢代“色傾後宮”的趙飛燕原為“省中侍使官婢”，即家妓。
在唐代，謝阿蠻是宮廷舞妓中最著名的，她以表演《淩波曲》而出名，成為唐玄宗李隆基最寵愛的教坊舞妓。關盼盼是唐代徐州著名的舞妓，據唐代詩人白居易《燕子樓三首·並序》雲，他出遊徐州時曾應邀赴張尚書宴，首次見到關盼盼等家妓表演的舞蹈節目，使白居易歎為觀止，於是即席賦詩來讚美她。
曆史上由妓女中所湧現出的女歌唱家也很多，如許永新、念奴等都是唐玄宗時著名的宮廷歌妓。有一次，唐玄宗在勤政樓舉行盛大宴會，但萬千觀眾的喧鬧聲幹擾了音樂聲，使玄宗很不高興。這時高力士建議由許永新登台演唱，以止喧嘩，果然許永新歌聲一起，頓時廣場寂靜無聲，觀眾都被她的歌喉所吸引了。
張紅紅也是唐代身懷絕技的音樂家。她原為韋青的家妓，後以藝能被召入宮內，被代宗封為才人，人稱“記曲娘子”。她實際上是個作曲家，她創造的“擺豆記譜法”是對中國古代音樂發展的一大貢獻。
這種情況，曆代不衰。例如到了明末清初，董小宛、顧媚、李香京、卞玉京等“金陵八絕”和陳圓圓、杜十娘、高娃等，都是名重天下的歌舞妓。還有王月生在南京朱市以吳歌著名，寇白門能度曲，沙才善吹簫，等等。她們的這些絕技，來自天賦，也來自後天的嚴格訓練。
有許多妓女，文才也很好，在琴棋書畫方麵都表現出較高的才華。在這方麵，唐代的薛濤、魚玄機、關盼盼，宋代的蘇翠、嚴蕊，明代的馬守真、薛素素、範鈺等，可謂代表。
在中國古代，幾乎每個朝代的詩詞精華都要被妓女占一席之地。例如《全唐詩》收錄有21位妓女作家的詩篇136首。同時，還有不少詩詞是歌詠妓女生涯的，如在《全唐詩》中收集的49430首詩歌中，有關妓女的就有2000多首，可見，妓女生涯已成為一些文人雅士的創作源泉。
和中國古代的這些高級妓女相似的是日本的藝妓。藝妓是日本曆代首要的玩偶女人，是最好的藝術品。她們首先是“妓”，有時也出賣肉體，但主要是“藝”，以藝術取悅於上層階級，使他們欣賞，使他們增強美感，所以有人說，藝妓象征著日本的美感。
既然藝妓主要是“藝”，就必須從小接受嚴格的歌舞和其他藝術訓練，她們要掌握許多技藝、還要掌握一定的性愛技巧來為上層武士階級服務，甚至包括皇帝本人。掌握較高的藝術水平，而且懂得如何取悅於男子，這是一般的良家婦女所望塵莫及的。在人類曆史上，妓女從未像江戶時代的藝妓那樣對一個民族的文化起如此突出和重要的作用。
以上這種由妓女、尤其是高級妓女代表那個時代的文學藝術水平的情況不僅存在於日本、中國，而且存在於歐洲。恩格斯說過：“在雅典的全盛時期，則廣泛盛行至少是受國家保護的賣淫。超群出眾的希臘妓女，正是在這種賣淫的基礎上發展起來的，她們由於才智和藝術趣味而高出於古希臘羅馬時代的一般水平之上。”
