愛爾蘭人，?父親是皇家海軍陸戰隊上尉，母親來自牧師家庭。
他畢業於都柏林三一學院文學學士（Trinity College Dublin)。
1844年他的未婚妻因船難遇險。25歲他在傷痛之後移民加拿Woodstock。他餘生致力幫助他人，是虔誠的基督徒。 1847年因病返回愛爾蘭居住。1855年又回到加拿大生活。
1857年他搬到安大略省的Port Hope，在這裏，他再次墜入愛河，然而，1860年女友又因肺炎去世。
在他67歲時的十月的一天，與朋友相聚後夜晚失蹤，在安大略湖溺亡。安息在安大略省南部的Bewdley, Rive Lake。

這是他寫給病重母親的安慰信＜不住地禱告＞“Pray without Ceasing”(1855)。後來由Charles C. Converse譜曲為讚美詩，名＜耶穌是我親愛的朋友＞“What a Friend We Have in Jesus”

In his arms he'll take and shield thee; thou wilt find a solace there。
