assertion (declaration, statement)

George Bush made the assertion during the campaign that he will never raise taxes in the famous quote: “read my lips”.  However, he raised taxes during his term and later this became the main factor for his defeat by Clinton.

assimilate (make similar)

The length of time it takes for a new immigrant to be assimilated into the new society varies depending on whether the person stays with his own people or live with native people.

astute (sharp, shrewd)

We think that he is an astute investor judging by the money he made from stocks and bonds.

atone (make amends for)

He cheated his wife by carrying on an affair with another woman. As far as the wife is concerned, he has violated the sacred vow and there is nothing he can do to atone himself. 

atrocious (shockingly brutal or cruel)

Japanese government must apologize for the atrocious acts committed by its military during WWII such as the Shanghai and Nanjing massacres.

audacity (fearless daring)

Mike stood up in the auditorium and challenged certain statements the Chairman made during the annual employee meeting. Everyone was appalled by his audacity.

auger (tool for boring holes)

Ancient people use auger to bore holes.  

The psychic considers the falling leave as augur of bad luck.
