When the US Route System was created by AASHO during November 1926 the initial alignment of US Route 66 west of Kingman followed Oatman Highway. This routing was a major divergence from the established National Old Trails Road through Yucca. The initial alignment of US Route 66 along Oatman Highway was spurred by the mining interests of the Oatman area. During World War II the Oatman area was dealt a significant blow as gold was declared a non-essential metal. Mining in Oatman never really fully recovered following the war. During 1952 US Route 66 was moved to the more favorable grades west of Kingman through Yucca.
