慈母手中線，遊子身上衣。
Some thread in my kindly mother’s hands,
She's tailoring clothes for my expedition.

臨行密密縫，意恐遲遲歸。
Sewing them stitch by stitch neatly and carefully,
With worries about the uncertain return from the long long journeys.  

誰言寸草心，報得三春暉。
Even if the inch-tall grass overflowed full with gratitude,
Be hard to repay all the spring days for their graces and bounties.  


 

慈母手中線，遊子身上衣。
mother holds the thread in hands
and makes clothes for my journey

臨行密密縫，意恐遲遲歸。
sew stitch by stitch and worry 
about my tardy return

誰言寸草心，報得三春暉。
who dare say the inch-tall grass’ll

這個版本翻譯使用了第一人稱，就是作者是“我”，為增加親切感和身臨其境之感。thread不可數， 可以用the 、 some修飾。翻譯中要兼顧平衡一下幾點，確實是很不容易：1，律：中文強調每個字的平仄，英文翻譯強調音節2，押韻3，不丟失、翻譯出全部重要意像4，盡量對仗工整，不破壞原作骨架結構5，盡量少的字數和簡易的文字6，美做到六點，很難！例如：寸草心一句，中文是一個草字，grass是不可數名詞，英文翻譯就要是一株草a stalk/blade/stem of grass; 重要的是“心”，這個意象不能丟失，那麽，需要的文字舊多些了。還有如何翻譯寸字。所以三個字翻譯成英文就許多字了。另外，一個英文單詞不能像中文那樣，一個字就能構成一個完整的意象。例如：線，中文就是一個完整的意象，英文就得是the thread，or some 或者a roll（spool）of thread, 要2到四個單詞。
