The Big Island contains so many different climate zones in the world, which range from tropical forest to subalpine prairie, from snowy deserts to sand beaches, and from lava tube to coastal dunes. This allowed me to feel that the whole day in Hawaii was truly breathtaking. I hiked in the tropical rainforest in the morning, and overlooked the sun and sandy beaches on the snowy mountain in the afternoon. The Big Island is really full of adventures.
The most famous feature of the Big island is Volcanoes National Park, which encompasses the summits of two of the world's most active volcanoes. It is worth devoting a full day to exploring the volcanoes with continuing eruptions. Sometimes people are lucky enough to view lava from a very close distance, when it is flowing into the ocean. It is definitely one of the most unique and thrilling things to do in Hawaii.
According to travel guide books, lava viewing is a must-do activity on the Big island while one of those volcanoes is actively erupting. Hiking to the lava flow could be a bit dangerous, but adventure is worthwhile in itself. Even though there were no surface flows during my visit, only walking on the craters made me feel like I was walking on the surface of the moon. I completely have my mind blown by how crazy nature is!
