Beginners Guide to dry shampoo

The stormy season is fully upon us in Seattle and with those mornings becoming darker and darker, you’re going to want to take full advantage of those extra minutes in a nice warm bed. Wanna save yourself some time? Use the following tricks to get the look of “just washed" locks without extra shower time.

First, let’s start with the best brands for your buck.

Suave Refresh and Revive Dry Shampoo:

My personal favorite is the Suave brand for about $4 at most drug stores. However, there are a couple different options so it’s imperative that you get the SILVER bottle with the black cap. There is a gold one usually directly next it that has a distinct and powerful old lady smell. The silver one works amazingly and smells incredible. Also, I heard it’s the brand that Hilary Duff’s stylist uses and her hair always looks pretty on point.

Psssst! Instant Shampoo:

Another cost-effective is the Psssst! Instant Dry Shampoo Spray. It’s got more of an old school Aqua Net type vibe going on but for about $6, it’s a great option that lasts a really long time. Plus, it has powder built in so especially for blondes, it’s great for blending those roots between colors.

The Dry Texturizing Spray by Oribe:

Hands down my favorite/obsession. A little more pricey with the largest bottle coming in at $42, you may think that’s a bit much for hair product…until you use it once. Then you won’t believe it’s so cheap. This product not only absorbs oil but adds volume and texture without causing stickiness that mimics a Victoria Secret Model’s effortless tresses. This miracle spray smells good enough that they have crafted a perfume based due to popular demand.

Tips to really optimize usage:

Spray dry shampoo into roots before bed and avoid brushing. This way the spray has the ability to absorb oil and build body overnight making the next morning sans grease.

Flip hair upside down and spray in damp hair before blowdrying. This tactic may make a lot of volume so ladies with thicker or curlier hair, this may not be a necessary move for you.

Use dry shampoo at night and texturizing spray in the morning.

Blondes: In a pinch, baby powder is great substitute to prevent greasiness and helps hide those dark winter roots. Just make sure you run your fingers thoroughly through hair until it disappears to avoid the assumption you just have really bad dandruff.

Brunettes: Massage coco powder and corn starch through roots will have the same effect as baby powder. Plus you’ll smell like baked goods and everyone will probably just want to follow you around all day. Feel free to add an essential oil to switch up the fragrance to your hearts content.

If you are an every day hair washer, like I used to be, it may take a couple weeks to train your hair where instead of washing every other day, you will be able to move to every couple days. In the meantime, these above brands and tricks will have you looking bomb in the meantime. So hit that snooze button and spray away!
