That bought Ryan another season after rumors of his departure during the 2013 campaign. But after a win over Oakland to start this season, it was downhill from there. The Jets lost eight in a row, the worst skid for the franchise since an eight- game slide to start the 1996 season. Smiths development, or lack thereof, was a major reason for the Jets struggles this season. He was benched after a Week 8 loss to Buffalo, then returned to the starters role a month later in a Dec. 1 loss to Miami. The Jets played well down the stretch this season, as three of their last four losses came by less than six points.
