I picked up this book when I borrowed "War Trash" by Ha Jin at Menlo Park
library. I enjoyed the latter in the following days but have since been reading
"Crazy Rich Asians" on and off. I've gone through the first and last few
chapters and learned the tragedies of Astrid's and Nick's marriages, which do
not surprise me.
The author does a great job picturing the lives of the rich Asians as it invoked
a physical response, a nausea, that made it hard for me to continue.
It felt unreal, however. This is fiction but, this day and age, nobody could be
that shallow or naive when it comes to one's own happiness. Moreover, I'd like to
give the rich the benefit of the doubt--generations of wealth should've taught
them something more than consuming materials.
