WHAT KIND OF TREATMENTS ARE OUT THERE?

If you’re like many people, you want to treat your heartburn, whether it’s occasional or frequent, but are afraid to face a wall of different options at your local pharmacy. So what’s the difference between these treatments?

ANTACIDS

Antacids reduce the effects of (neutralize) stomach acid and are usually taken for short-term relief. Most antacids, such as Tums®, Rolaids® or Gaviscon®, are available as chewable tablets. They often provide instant relief, but may not be effective in the treatment of frequent heartburn.

H2 BLOCKERS

H2 blockers reduce the amount of acid your stomach makes. They relieve symptoms for a longer period of time than antacids, but may not last as long as PPIs. Widely available over-the-counter, they include brands such as Zantac® and Pepcid®.

PPIS

Short for proton pump inhibitors, these products are generally for the treatment of frequent heartburn. They may provide longer-term relief than antacids or H2s by significantly reducing the production of acid in the stomach. PPIs are available over-the-counter or by prescription. Prevacid®24HR is a PPI.
