王家衛於1958年出生於中國上海,5歲時隨父母移民香港,後再隨父母移民美國。1976年畢業於格致書院中五年級,1980年在就讀香港理工學院美術設計係兩年後,便放棄繼續修讀,進入電視廣播有限公司導演訓練班,並任製作助理[4]。其後,受到時任香港無線電視節目部經理的香港媒體人甘國亮的垂青,獲得大量戲劇創作機會,因此王家衛一直視甘國亮為恩師。
1981年離開無綫電視,投身電影圈任編劇。1980年代王家衛共寫過13個電影劇本,憑《最後勝利》獲提名香港電影金像獎最佳編劇。

王家衛的電影,有著強烈的個人風格,喜用緩慢的節奏,配以適當的音樂,帶出電影的氣氛,其攝影手法亦非常獨特。[15]。他常與杜可風、張叔平合作,被外界稱為鐵三角[16]。張、杜二人也使王家衛的電影在畫麵上更有美感[17]。杜可風拍攝王家衛的電影時,其攝影手法亦非常獨特,其「手提式」及「半掩式」的手法成為了他們的標誌[18][19]。
王家衛鍾情於在他的電影中任用一些具有強烈個人風格以及演技口碑及敬業精神極好的演員,如:梁朝偉、張國榮、張曼玉、張學友、劉嘉玲、王菲等都是他作品中的常客;而在他作品的職員表中,更是始終貫徹名單一致的政策;鮮有更改。
王家衛導演的戲大多沒有預先的劇本[20],隻在拍攝當日才會給演員台詞,這令演員在觀看影片成品之前也不會知道戲的內容[21]。甚至有「拍電影的方法有兩種,第二種是王家衛的拍法」之說。直到拍攝《藍莓之夜》時候,因成本緣故,才開始採用劇本[22]。王家衛的執導風格,令很多演員在其作品中有優異的演出[23],亦有很多演員表示拍過王家衛的電影後演技進步,如張曼玉、章子怡及梁朝偉[24][25]。
也都因爲王家衛「慢工出細貨」的緣故,很多電影的拍攝時間都非常長。其中《2046》花費五年時間,而《一代宗師》則耗費十年,以上兩片口碑不俗,而《2046》中的梁朝偉和章子怡在第24屆香港電影金像獎分別奪得影帝和影後。九年後,章子怡再凴《一代宗師》問鼎影後。
2019年王家衛獲得香港編劇家協會頒發的「榮譽大獎」。王家衛接受記者訪問否認自己的電影沒有劇本,而是自嘲自己喜歡在酒吧、茶餐室和各種餐廳寫劇本,並且攜帶《重慶森林》的完整劇本讓記者看。王家衛還透露自己慢工出細貨的原因。因為他寫劇本不會一氣嗬成。而是先有故事劇本大綱整體,故事劇本流程是一邊想一邊寫。如果當遇到問題的時候放下筆休息去走走。慢慢的劇本的靈感就回來了。
王家衛的電影,多被形容為浪漫,題材多是探討愛情為主。王家衛導演的電影都是以文藝性質居多,並非大部分人所喜好,更有部分人甚至業內人士常批評他的電影沉悶、難懂[28],甚至批評故事支離破碎,毫無內容[29]。但其作品在互聯網電影數據庫(IMDb)、爛番茄(Rotten Tomatoes)等網站也都有很好的評價,但也因為他所執導拍攝的電影工作時間太長、進度太慢,部份藝人、演員的支持者、粉絲都在抗議,認為他們的偶像為了王家衛的新片拍攝導致無法在其他活動、媒體上曝光,間接降低了人氣、知名度。
