Trump Offers Non-Apology On Racist Judge Comments

Top Republicans have slammed his remarks as the “literal definition of racism.”http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/donald-trump-offers-non-apology-on-racist-judge-comments_us_575720dbe4b0b60682df2f2b

Donald Trump on Tuesday tried to repair some of the damage his remarks about a federal judge have caused, after leading Republican figures criticized him over the racially motivated attacks.

The two page statement read, in part:

My comments have been misconstrued as a categorical attack against people of Mexican heritage. I am friends with and employ thousands of people of Mexican and Hispanic descent. The American justice system relies on fair and impartial judges. All judges should be held to that standard. I do not feel that one’s heritage makes them incapable of being impartial, but, based on the rulings that I have received in the Trump University civil case, I feel justified in questioning whether I am receiving a fair trial.

Trump’s full statement reads like a hybrid mix of his typical language and that of a completely different person. Two paragraphs in particular, at the top and bottom, did not sound the least like the presumptive GOP nominee. “While this lawsuit should have been dismissed, it is now scheduled for trial in November. I do not intend to comment on this matter any further,” the final paragraph states.

The businessman’s pledge not to talk about the case represented a total about-face for Trump, who instructed his campaign surrogates on Monday to amplify their attacks on Judge Gonzalo Curiel and journalists who asked about the case. Trump reportedly told his top supporters to accuse reporters and Democrats of being the real racists.

He has repeatedly attacked the ?Indiana-born judge, who is presiding over a class action lawsuit against Trump University, the reality TV personality’s now-defunct seminar school. The businessman claims the judge is a “Trump-hater” who is “Mexican.”

Republicans and Democrats alike have condemned Trump’s threats and accusations about Curiel’s heritage. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) said on Tuesday that he would no longer support Trump’s presidential bid. Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) on Monday called the comments “the literal definition of “racism.”

The statement signals that Trump has gotten the message from his fellow Republicans. Yet to call it an apology would be incorrect.

Due to what I believe are unfair and mistaken rulings in this case and the Judge’s reported associations with certain professional organizations, questions were raised regarding the Obama appointed Judge’s impartiality. It is a fair question.

The reality TV personality went on to rehash some of the familiar defenses he has brought out before in the ongoing Trump University case — which alleges he committed fraud, but he says the students, many of whom paid up to $35,000 to learn the businessman’s “secrets,” were happy with the program.

Read the full statement below:

It is unfortunate that my comments have been misconstrued as a categorical attack against people of Mexican heritage.

Over the past few weeks, I have watched as the media has reported one inaccuracy after another concerning the ongoing litigation involving Trump University. There are several important facts the public should know and that the media has failed to report.

Throughout the litigation my attorneys have continually demonstrated that students who participated in Trump University were provided a substantive, valuable education based upon a curriculum developed by professors from Northwestern University, Columbia Business School, Stanford University and other respected institutions. And, the response from students was overwhelming. Over a five year period, more than 10,000 paying students filled out surveys giving the courses high marks and expressing their overwhelming satisfaction with Trump University’s programs. For example:

  • Former student Tarla Makaeff, the original plaintiff in the litigation, not only completed multiple surveys rating Trump University’s three-day seminar “excellent” in every category, but also praised Trump University’s mentorship program in a glowing 5 plus minute video testimonial. When asked “how could Trump University help to meet [her] goals”, she simply stated “[c]ontinue to offer great classes.” Once the plaintiffs’ lawyers realized how disastrous a witness she was, they asked to have her removed from the case. Over my lawyers’ objections, the judge granted the plaintiffs’ motion, but allowed the case to continue.
  • Art Cohen, a lead plaintiffs in the litigation, completed a survey in which he not only rated Trump University’s three-day seminar “excellent” in virtually every category, but went so far as to indicate that he would “attend another Trump University seminar” and even “recommend Trump University seminars to a friend.” When asked how Trump University could improve the seminar, Mr. Cohen’s only suggestion was to “[h]ave lunch sandwiches brought in” and make the lunch break 45 minutes.
  • Former student Bob Giullo, who has been critical of Trump University in numerous interviews and negative advertisements from my political opponents, also expressed his satisfaction, rating Trump University’s programs “excellent” in every category. When asked how Trump University could improve its programs, Mr. Giullo simply asked that students be provided “more comfortable chairs.”

Indeed, these are just a few of literally thousands of positive surveys, all of which can be viewed online at www.98percentapproval.com.

For those students who decided that Trump University’s programs were not for them, the company had a generous refund policy, offering a full refund to any student who asked for their money back within 3 days of signing up for a program or by the end of the first day of any multi-day program, whichever came later.

Normally, legal issues in a civil case would be heard in a neutral environment. However, given my unique circumstances as nominee of the Republican Party and the core issues of my campaign that focus on illegal immigration, jobs and unfair trade, I have concerns as to my ability to receive a fair trial.

I am fighting hard to bring jobs back to the United States. Many companies – like Ford, General Motors, Nabisco, Carrier – are moving production to Mexico. Drugs and illegal immigrants are also pouring across our border. This is bad for all Americans, regardless of their heritage.

Due to what I believe are unfair and mistaken rulings in this case and the Judge’s reported associations with certain professional organizations, questions were raised regarding the Obama appointed Judge’s impartiality. It is a fair question. I hope it is not the case.

While this lawsuit should have been dismissed, it is now scheduled for trial in November. I do not intend to comment on this matter any further. With all of the thousands of people who have given the courses such high marks and accolades, we will win this case!

Donald J. Trump

Trump didn't say he wasn't receiving a fair trial because of evidence. He said he wasn't being treated fairly because the judge was Mexican! This is a judge whose family had to go into hiding for prosecuting Mexican drug cartels. Trums is just laying the groundwork to WHINE about the case going against him.

But the Donald is so innocent, he was just selling a Bachelor Degree in Con Arts from Trump University offering people the HUGE opportunity to learn about “Trump’s secrets for success” without having to attend class with actual instructors for a mere tuition fee between $35K-$50K. The Fact that Trump University students didn’t find Trump secrets for success useful to improve their financial situation has no basis for a lawsuit because they should be happy that they paid for a no registered university that does actually issues any Degree Titles because their tuition fees help finance Trump’s campaign so these students should be grateful to Trump because he will make America great again to turn all Americans into his piggybacks.

The proper way for Donald Trump to request that Judge Curiel recuse himself is to ask his lawyers to file a motion setting forth the reasons which make recusal appropriate. His lawyers have not filed such a motion. If they did and the Judge denied the motion, Trump could appeal.

If Trump’s grounds for the motion and/or appeal are that the Judge is of Mexican heritage, which is Trump’s public position, the motion will be denied by Judge Curiel and on appeal. Trump’s lawyers, and therefore presumably Trump, know this.

So why is Trump publicly attacking this Judge? Is it because he wants to rei
nforce his anti-Mexican/anti-immigrant political position? That hardly seems necessary. Or is Trump trying to intimidate Judge Curiel, i.e. force Judge Curiel to recuse himself knowing that if he proceeds through normal legal channels he cannot succeed? It seems to me that this is Trump’s most likely motivation.

So the question becomes “Do we have one set of rules for Donald Trump and a different set of rules for everyone else?”

He probably tried to bribe this judge with a political donation like he did in the AGs in Florida and Texas, and this judge refused.

The answer is yes...we have one set of rules for the super-rich and one set of rules for everyone else. Sadly, that's the economic and societal structure we've created.

He has such comtempt for this whole process that even if he apologized it would be hollow and in a few days it would be another crisis.. He is really not interested in becoming president, that is more than apparent or he would never have acted this asinine from the very start. Cut him loose GOP and stop fighting the inevitable.

Why doesn't he just provide us with examples of some of the students that successfully benefited from Trump University courses? I mean it won't stop the lawsuit, but it could persuade (gullible) people that they actually taught some people how to get rich in real estate.

Sir you rang the bell and you can't unring it. No amount of tap dancing can change it. I am so misunderstood always his fall back situation. He lies misunderstood, disses handicap newsman, disrespects women, ban Muslims, build a wall, Mexicans are rapists and drug dealers. Pick a subject any subject and a derogatory comment had been made. Make America Great again. His view of this nation is we are diminished and only I can fix it. Maybe we need to look at his track record of lawsuits filed by him and against him. If you have a person who at this time of the campaign is more occupied with his business than the countries business, I think he believes his life won't change a bit. Think before you act isn't an activity that Trump engages in often. He barely remembers what he said days before but nevertheless he is always right just ask him. America is already great but even with the flaws of our nation he thinks it needs a complete overhaul. The problem his thinking needs a lube job a mental overhaul is overdue but so does The Republican Party.

Let's see here. Trump the Dunce feels the rulings have unfair but casts doubt because he's (the Judge) of Mexican heritage. If the rulings are unfair, how does that have anything to do w the Judge's Mexican background? I think the Donald knows he's in lots of trouble and since he's not really running for president, his business is about to suffer another blow. The con is coming undone.

Love the twisting of words and slipping in the judge is an Obama appointee. He is also a Republican appointee but he leaves that out, of course. No one misconstrued him as attacking all people with a Mexican heritage, just you bringing up one. The judge belongs to one organization not multiple to help disadvantaged Hispanics. Trump might as well as tried his entire case in this lame explanation, where he is not at fault in any way, shape or form. Sad...

That is one of the more laughable things he has said. No one ever has the chance to misconstrue the horrible things he says. He says them bluntly, loud and proud, and better yet goes on a media tour to repeat the racist statements and arrogantly adds to them with things that are even more offensive. No Donald, no one misconstrued or misunderstood what you said. We read you loud and clear.

Trump's explanation is simply a restatement of his side of the case. This has nothing to do with his contention that the judge has ruled unfairly nor does it square his remarks about the judge's heritage and professional association with his theory that the Trump Wall so offends the judge that he is biased against Trump. Do none of Trump's "many" Mexican and Latino friends also think the Wall is a bad idea? Does Judge Curiel ? No one knows how he feels about it except Trump. Funny about that.

Trump does not listen to Republicans because he is not one of them. He is a party of one, and he says whatever he feels like at the moment. He thinks he doesn't need them. that is not an apology, it is trying to get out of a law suit that may cost him billions and the ego will be smashed. This man knows he committed fraud and now he is trying to blame it on a judge, if he were white then he would have found something else wrong with him, this time it is because he was an OBama appointment and he is hispanic ome what have the GOP done

This is one big reason America keeps voting for politicians like Trump

U.S. Illiteracy Statistics Data
Percent of U.S. adults who can’t read (below a basic level) 14 %
Number of U.S. adults who can’t read 32,000,000
Percent of prison inmates who can’t read 70 %
Percent of high school graduates who can’t read 19 %

What is shocking is that nearly 1 out of five high school graduates can't read.

"questions were raised regarding the Obama appointed Judge’s impartiality"

Obama did not appoint this judge. And, as for the impartiality of the students who rated the class at the end, studies have proven them useless as most people feel giving bad marks could reflect negatively on their final grade and future prospects for good recommendations from the faculty!

DOn't get conned in 2016--vote Democrat.
