Youth

  Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

  Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

  Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

  Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.

  When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty , but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

        青春不是年華，而是一種心態；不是玫瑰般的臉龐，紅潤的嘴唇和敏捷的雙腿，而是堅韌的意誌，豐富的想象力，以及無窮的激情；青春是生命深處的一股清泉。

　　青春意味著勇氣多於怯懦，青春意味著喜歡冒險而討厭安逸。擁有此種品質的人之中，六十歲的老人往往多於二十歲的年輕人。沒有人隻因年齡的增長而年老，人們往往因放棄理想而年老。

　　歲月可使肌膚長滿皺紋，但放棄激情可使心靈布滿灰塵。焦慮，疑惑，猜疑，恐懼和沮喪＿＿都會挫傷心靈，磨損意誌。

　　不管是白發老人還是青春少年，每個人的心裏皆有其喜歡之新奇事物，對星星和類似星星的東西皆有好奇之心，敢於挑戰，對未知事物的孩子般的渴求之心，樂於享受生活帶來的樂趣。

　　我們因充滿信心而變得年輕；因心存疑慮而變得年老；因自信而年輕，因心存恐懼而年老，因充滿希望而年輕，因滿懷沮喪而年老。

　　人人心裏都有一座無線電台，隻要接受到來自地球，人類和宇宙的美好，希望，勇氣，莊嚴及力量，就會變得年輕。

　　當心靈的天線倒下，心如大雪般的悲觀，如冰塊般的憤世嫉俗，那時，惟有那時我們將真正老去。

作者簡介：

  塞繆爾·烏爾曼(Samuel Ullman)1840年生於德國，童年時移居美國。參加過南北戰爭，後來定居於拉巴馬州的伯明翰市。他是一位五金製品商，熱心公益67年如一日。在其生 前的最後幾年，他曾日本得到一本書及其作品的錄音盒帶稿酬36,000美元，並全部捐贈給伯明翰市的一所亞拉巴馬州立大學作為獎學基金。

 

  《青春》有的版本譯為《年輕》。是德裔美籍人塞繆爾.厄爾曼70多年前寫的一篇隻有四百多字的短文。首次在美國發表的時候，曾在廣大讀者中引起轟動效應， 成千上萬的讀者把它抄下來當作座右銘收藏，許多中老年人把它當作為安排後半生的精神支柱。據說美國的麥克阿瑟將軍在指揮整個太平洋戰爭期間，辦公桌上始終 擺著裝有短文《年輕》複印件的鏡框，文中的許多的詞句常被他在談話或開會作報告時引用。後來此文傳到日本，文章的觀點成為許多日本人生活哲學的基礎，他們 甚至將此文裝在隨身帶的皮夾子裏，有空就讀一遍。著名的鬆下公司的創始人鬆下幸之助說：“多年來，《年輕》始終是我的座右銘。”

小兒就要結束他的K這一年了，翻著厚厚一塌子他在學校的作品，跟他一起感受他的快樂童年。
這張畫，老師把他縮小做成了一枚胸針，母親節時作為禮物送給了我。
終於看到這張原稿，很喜歡，原來是很大一張呢。老師還心細的給它壓了模。
我就把它貼在客廳的牆上，有些梵高作品的意思。
