關於Mike Nichols 與 Emma Thompson 的 “Wit“ 這算不上書評，因為並未讀原著，1999 普立策 winning play, by Margaret Edson. 但有Emma Thompson 參與做編劇的片子，通常當書來讀，更何況這部片子大部分是獨白。 晦澀艱難的話題，生與死，由一個研究了它一生的學者來親曆由生到死，intellectual 層麵上對salvation anxiety 的理解和outwit不能抵擋身體親曆的痛楚，那末從此岸到彼岸這中間，我們靠什末來支撐？我們終究會被得救，但我們如何麵對它（salvation anxiety）？ 這裏永遠是一個paradox 。我們的理性曾是我們直麵種種虛無的憑借，甚至滋生出驕傲，但我們也最終被它桎枯，無路可逃。我們以為我們能夠，我們甚至構想我們勝利到達彼岸時的歡呼，Death (Capital D), 再用一個驚歎號：！ 但，這不是真相。 Vivian 是研究17 世紀metaphysical poet John Donne 的 資深學者。 我們都認為莎士比亞有一種supernatural的力量參透human nature, 但與John Donne 相比，’莎士比亞 象 Hallmark Card.’ (劇中語)。John Donne is deadly intense, 他的詩就是用種種metaphor 來coax new perspective。這是一個自製的迷宮，由一個conceit 到另一個conceit，環環相扣，試圖從現世到永生之間找到一種憑借來麵對死亡， 亦或 ultimate judgment。 那麽John Donne 找到了麽？ And death shall be no more, (comma) Death, (comma) thou shalt die. ----John Donne，Holy Sonnet X 原來這隻是一個pause, 如同comma。真相是：life, death, eternal life…..they are connected. It is very simple, no insuperable barriers. Just a pause, a comma. It is not wit, but truth. 這是個paradox，截然對立的兩麵，共存於一體， 生死原是河的兩岸，他們是一體。但年輕的Vivian 不這樣看， And Death, (capital D) shall be no more; (semi colon) Death, (capital D) thou shalt die! (exclamation mark) -------The edition of John Donne Vivian chose. 這是drama，which caters to our illusion we create for ourselves to suffocate our fear. 我們在惶恐地掩飾，用exclamation mark這種 hysterical punctuation來掩飾such simple profound meaning of death----a pause. Vivian 用她一貫uncompromising 的態度直麵死亡，她永遠都可以到達，她從不計較代價，她付得起，即使是生命。當超強劑量的治療終於危及到她的免疫係統，在飽受疼痛煎熬的時候，她依然在做她生命處境的觀照者(onlooker)，她說：這是一個paradox，我的treatment 在破壞我的健康，paradox is very hard to teach. 她對死亡有備而來，她具備一切關於生與死的knowledge, 或者說是wit，甚至the tendency to outwit。當病魔的痛楚向她襲來時，她在recite John Donne的詩。她洞察這種treatment 的後果，她的態度是：let it go… 象John Donne的詩，which begins with a valiant struggle with death, calling all the forces of intellect and drama to vanquish the enemy. It is ultimately about overcoming the seeing insuperable barriers separating life, death and eternal life. Barrier, barrier無處不在，但我是一種force, uncompromising, I can conquer.----這是Vivian 的 self-portrait. Vivian 接受治療的過程是她從一個研究者到研究者的subject 的過程，她一輩子研究John Donne的詩，主題是生與死， 現在她自己是主題。她從年輕的residency doctor 身上看到了自己。 residency doctor 對cancer 的fascination 就象她對John Donne的詩。But something is missing…A sense of humanity, human kindness. 因為John Donne 的toughness and intensity, 她一直都在overcoming the seeing barriers，以至於她自己變成another barrier, alienating her students from the touch of humanity though a poetry. 如此簡單深邃的東西，她竟然錯過了。 在彌留之際，Vivian 不再拒絕痛感，在從前的老師懷裏痛哭，simply stating the truth, not drama anymore----I am in pain. 不再讓老師recite John Donne的詩了，salvation 近了，God最終會找到她，象mummy boney 找到 baby boney 一樣。原本就沒有什末insuperable barriers，隻是一個pause，death 之後是eternal life。 death shall be no more, (comma) Death, (comma) thou shalt die.
