記憶中 , 每年感恩節我都是跟爸媽 1 起過的. 隻有 2-3 次沒有飛回家的記錄 , 因為當年在外地讀大學要準備 final. 結婚後, 我和 KIM 每年都會飛到在外州的爸媽家團聚.
今年的感恩節我和 KIM 臨時決定不飛了, 因為剛剛跟爸媽在 BVI 渡完假 , 再加上我有個特別的計劃 . 打電話跟爸媽講不回家的原因是要去幫忙 church thanksgiving dinner for the homeless & poor. 媽媽高興的說這個想法很好 , 應該的 , 去吧 ! 爸爸卻不放心的說盡力就好, 不要太累了.
這是我拿到的 volunteer handout excerpts:
Cooking food at Church on Wed (11/21) the day before Thanksgiving, please bring aprons, peeler & sharp knives with you, volunteers are needed from 9AM~4PM.
Work in the kitchen on Thanksgiving day (11/22), volunteers are needed from 2PM~8PM.
Serve the dinner on Thanksgiving day (11/22), volunteers are needed from 5:30PM~8:30PM
Cleanup after Thanksgiving Dinner (11/22), volunteers are needed from 8:45PM~10:00PM
We ask all volunteers to bring a baked turkey, or bring items from the shopping list to the Church by noon the Wed. (11/21), we need 50 cooked turkeys to make this project a success.
我選的是 cooking food & kitchen work, KIM 選的是 serve the dinner & cleanup. 這是我們第 1 次在感恩節當 volunteer, 因為要鼓動 KIM 和我 1 起去 , 我就答應明年要陪他看現場 2 次 hockey + 2 次 football, 他聽完後就滿意的說 deal~!
Wed. 9am, 我來到 church. 已經有很多 volunteers 貼著 name tag 站著 1 起聊天了 , 還有幾個 8-9 歲的小孩也跟著爸媽過來幫忙 . 幾排長桌上放著要處理的 vegs--- potato, sweet potato, green bean, carrot, etc. 另 1 邊的幾排長桌子上放著所有 volunteers’ donations--- baked turkeys, homemade pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce & items from the shopping list. ( 因為我對自己的 homemade 能力不自信 , 所以就買了 10 個 pumpkin pie & 2 箱 soda) 角落的1邊放著1堆堆包好的donated blankets, coats, sweaters & winter shoes…
大家 social 了幾分種後就開始工作 , 麵對麵的坐下 , 帶著膠手套邊工作邊聊天說笑 . 我的工作是 peel the potatoes & sweet potatoes, 再放進旁邊的冰水盒裏 . 沒想到 1 直刮皮也是很辛苦的,我的手馬上就累了,手套上都是白白的印子, 但感覺旁邊沒有刮皮的還是很多很多…
終於所有的 vegs 都處理好了 , 幾個男生就抬進 kitchen. 因為 donated baked turkeys 隻有 40 隻 , 所以還要再烤 10. 我和 teammates 就開始準備烤前的事 ---trussing, brining, compound butter & injecting flavored liquid etc….( 大家看起來好像都很有經驗的樣子,除了我之外,哈哈哈 ….) 還有 1 組 team 在擺桌椅, 桌布, balloon, 為明天的 thanksgiving dinner 做簡單的 decoration.
中午, 大家很簡單的吃點 snack 就到 kitchen 工作. 我們要把 donated baked turkeys 切片裝進 big tray, 明天隻要 reheat 就可以了. 2 個很有經驗的老先生和老太太很詳細的表演給我們看要怎樣切片, 大家都很認真的邊看邊學. 我平時就很怕拿刀, 所以選了最簡單的裝盤工作, 就是把大家切好的肉片放進 tray 再用 aluminum foil 蓋好, 站旁邊的 teammate 就把裝好的 tray 排好放進 freezer.
另外 1 組 team 把我們剛剛準備好的 10 隻 turkey 分 2 次放進 oven. 邊工作邊聞著 oven 裏飄出來的香味 , 突然就感覺好餓 ! 我就深深的吸氣微笑說 "OMG, smell soooo good~…."大家都很開心的笑著回應我 ……. 真是很奇妙的感覺 , 從非洲回來後我 1 直都沒有很好的胃口 , 有時候吃了還會莫名其妙的吐出來 , 從來都沒有這種很餓很想吃東西的感覺 , thank god for bringing my appetite back, finally~!
4PM, 我們終於把所有要準備的東西都準備好了, oh yeah!
回家後, KIM 已經下班回來了. 我興奮的跟他說怎樣的好玩 , 他就笑著說 glad u enjoyed it..

Yeah, today is the day~!
早上醒來, 我還躺在床上就拿電話打給爸媽感謝他們多年對我付出的時間和愛. 洗完澡後, 再寫個長長的郵件給公婆感謝他們養育KIM和對我的關心和愛護, 再在FB貼上寫給所有好友的信, 感謝大家的1路相伴.
簡單吃完brunch就出發, 我們到church 在1:30PM. Parking 已經有點緊了, 因為今天所有volunteer & church staff都會到, 有些還會帶家人1起來.
在reception簽名再貼上name tag. KIM的工作時間還沒有到, 他就跟其他volunteer聊天social, 我敢快跑進kitchen工作. 剛走進kitchen就感覺到熱氣, 原來有team把2大窩煮好的potato倒進幾個huge tray準備做mashed potatoes. 今天我們要做trays of mashed potatoes and candied sweet potatoes & green been. 我的工作就是mash the potatoes with potato masher, 我2支手抓著potato masher拚命壓, 想像就是在做運動健身, 我的teammate在旁邊慢慢的到milk, 我再拌milk和potato, 就這樣我們1起做了5-6個trays of mashed potatoes…..
旁邊的 team把昨天切好的turkey放進oven reheat, 有的在切pumpkin pie, 有的煮green bean, 有的做gravy, 有的在做sweet potatoes, 那種混著milk, potato, turkey & pie 的氣味又讓我開始感覺到有點餓. 突然就明白了, 為什麽多數chef都比較big, 因為真的很難抵擋啦, but, except us, cuz we are the fearless people in the kitchen~~~~ lol….
我邊工作邊飄浮在餓和累的感覺中, 突然發現---everything is ready! 我望著1盒盒蓋著foil 的tray放在推車上麵, 被推出kitchen時, 突然就感覺有點激動, 真希望當時我能拍幾張自己親手做的thanksgiving meal, 可是我的iphone放在車裏, 我的手帶著膠手套…...
外麵的音樂響起來了, the band was playing some welcome songs. 我們就跑到the hall. 今晚的客人已經開始慢慢的進場了, 有明顯看起來是homeless的, 有some of the city’s less fortunate residents, 有全家1起來的, 也有單獨來的, 但大家都帶著節日的微笑在排隊拿meal.
我到處尋找KIM的身影, 終於看到他站在那排放著很多tray的長桌子後麵, 滿麵笑容的為排隊的客人serve the meal並跟那些人熱情的講話. 排隊拿東西的人太多了, 我就沒有跑過去找他, 就遠遠的站在1邊微笑的看著他臉上那種溫暖迷人的微笑…..
The pastor站在stage發表簡短講話 "nothing makes me happier than seeing this place used for a beautiful and joyful event, I never seen so many people here and this place is large gathering ever. It’s a huge blessing to make this meal at the special time for our guests, thank you for coming here and fulfill this place with beauty and joy and with a wonderful thanksgiving dinner………"
接著pastor帶著所有人1起禱告. 結束後, 音樂輕輕的響起來, stage上的歌手開始演唱---amazing grace, 所有的人都跟著唱. 不知道為什麽, 唱著唱著我的眼淚就忍不住的流下來, 後來發現旁邊坐著的幾個人也都在偷偷的擦眼淚. 原來音樂帶著美麗的魔力輕輕的撥動了所有人的心!
The pastor接著說 "we thank all our amazing volunteers for their ongoing support and commitment, let's give a big round of applause to those generous individuals who donated food items and time to make this wonderful thanksgiving meal……"這時所有人都向我們拍手微笑表示感謝, 不知道為什麽我竟然有點smile shyly, 可是我並不是shy person, so weird…..
Stage上的樂隊演唱著各種好聽的Christian song, 大家邊吃著thanksgiving dinner邊欣賞音樂邊低聲說話. 我靜靜的靠在牆邊站著, 微笑的看著眼前的1切, 心情很激動也很溫暖. 從小到大, 我都很習慣的享用著最好的東西, 最好的服務, 很習慣穿著美麗的衣服在Stage上跳著美麗的舞蹈, 卻不知道其實默默的躲在kitchen用心為那些需要幫忙的陌生人做1次對他們來講意義重大的晚餐就是感恩節裏最大的感恩!
我忍不住在心裏說 “thank u Lord for everything that u've given me in my life….. my family…..my friends…..experiences and the opportunities to help others..….I'm so blessed!”
