2009 Xmas shutdown project: Kitchen sink replacement

My tenant called me in November and said that the cast iron kitchen sink was damaged.

Since the cast iron kitchen sink weighs as much as 150lbs and it was not a water leaking emergency, I decided to wait until my company's Christmas shutdown time to replace the damaged sink with a stainless steel one. This decision proved to be correct later when I repaired the sink. Meanwhile, I thought about the procedures and tools to do the repair since it was my first time to replace the cast iron kitchen sink.

工欲善其事,必先利其器。Here are the tools needed for this project.

The multi-purpose tool was used to cut the grout around the sink to separate the sink. And then I used the car jack to lift the cast iron sink gradually out of the kitchen sink cradle. It proved to be very effective and useful (yes, do not laugh). Finally I removed the old sink and installed the new stainless steel sink with a stainless steel faucet bought from Home Depot.

When I put the food disposal and the drainage pipes back on, I realized that the drainage pipes were out of alignment with the sink holes because of the new stainless steel sink. It was too late for the day and I decided to do the drainage pipe replacement tomorrow.

The next day, I cut the old drainage pipes completely almost to the wall and rebuilt the drainage pipes. I prefer using this screw on pipe compared to glue on one just in case the sink is damage later. Notice that both bowls need a P or U trap. In addition, I replaced the old plastic supply water valves with new valves to allow the faucet water lines to be connected to the valves directly. Please see the picture below.

My experience tells me that it is always prudent to assume more time to do the repair when I repair something never done before. By giving enough time to figure out the solution to a problem, I can find the best solution to the problem and save many griefs later.
