《鴿子哨》是一部京味電視劇，故事從上個世紀70年代中後期說起，通過一個老北京大雜院裏幾戶普通人家的悲喜故事和心路曆程，反映出改革開放30年來中國 老百姓生活的巨大變化。1976年的那場地震，讓一個院住的楊大媽和米老師結下了冤仇，兩個人誓不往來。但楊大媽的兒子楊燕平卻和米老師的女兒米曉菊從小 相好，早已確定了戀愛關係。楊燕平從黑龍江回來，發現從山西插隊回來的曉菊發生了很大的變化，變得現實了，俗氣了。還有消息說，曉菊回城是靠出賣自己的身 體換來的。這讓燕平無論如何接受不了，他們終於分了手。大受刺激的曉菊發奮要靠自己的力量活得比誰都好，她拉著同院的小夥子生子做起了生意。從菜市場賣菜 到西單夜市賣服裝，到自己開店……曉菊和生子的生意越做越大。

隨著時代的變遷，院子裏的人也都發生了不少變化。房主，老資本家唐爺爺，幫曉菊的生意出了不少點子，曉菊和生子的生意越做越紅火。米老師重新當了老師，曉 菊又為他買了不少時髦的電器，讓他揚眉吐氣地站在楊大媽麵前。曉菊和燕平的婚姻沒有結果，米老師學電腦的兒子曉書又愛上了楊大媽的女兒燕紅。這兩家歡喜冤 家的事情是了不清了。
