周劍虹（梁朝偉）因母親當年的一段三角戀愛，竟令他出世後不知生父是誰。母親生他時難產而死，他就由兩個父親周榮及鄒有共同撫養。劍虹大學畢業後，先結識 女督察謝碧華（翁美玲）及女律師林少文（陳敏兒），兩人均在他心中留下印象。
劍虹在一珠寶公司覓得理想工作後，便努力爭取表現。在一次洽談生意中發現上司及一些同事瞞著公司，從中漁利，遂向董事長楊兆安投訴，因而甚受賞識。
兆安外孫江天偉（呂良偉）經劍虹介紹而認識少文，遂展開追求；與此同時，少文知悉劍虹隻視自己為知己，故接受了天偉的愛意。但劍虹、碧華、天偉及少文間感 情發展，忽離又合，始終糾纏不清。
此外，兆安無意中查悉周榮竟是他前妻所生的兒子，劍虹便是其孫，大感興奮，決栽培劍虹，讓他日後接管珠寶公司。此事給其子楊誌堅知悉，大為憤怒，決要清除 異己，實行他的奪權大計…

幕後花絮：
1985年，翁美玲出演《挑戰》中的謝碧華一角。
翁美玲飾演的謝碧華，是警務督察，為人爽朗自信，具正義感，對工作異常投入，隻是比較衝動。 在感情方麵，可謂多姿多采，受男士們熱烈追求，與梁朝偉飾演的周劍虹因互相鬥氣而漸漸為互相了解，且發展了一段備受考驗的愛情。
1985年首播的時裝中篇劇《挑戰》，是當年大受觸目的劇集。除了因為劇情緊湊、演員陣容強勁外；亦因為在此劇播映期間，女主角翁美玲突然自殺身亡，令觀 眾難以忘懷。《挑戰》是翁美玲最後一套擔綱演出的劇集，亦是她罕有的時裝劇演出。她於此劇首次夥拍五虎中最後崛起的梁朝偉，可惜這次合作亦成絕響。一向擅 演刁蠻女子的翁美玲，這次作出新突破，扮演硬朗女警；與飾演教師的梁朝偉因誤會而結識，繼而由鬥氣甩冤家發展成情侶。兩人雖然首次合作，但演起情侶來頗有 默契；亦因外型相襯，廣為觀眾受落。
此劇另外兩為男女主角為呂良偉及陳敏兒，兩人日後一位在電影圈大放異彩，另一位進軍進司儀界，成為tvb金牌司儀之一，已鮮有再合作的機會。劇中呂良偉飾 演的青年才俊，邂逅陳敏兒飾演的初出茅廬女律師，立即展開熱烈追求；幾經波折，最後結成佳偶。同劇還有老戲骨關海山、劉丹、夏雨和歐陽佩珊，與一眾年青演 員切磋演技，使這四十集的時裝劇更添色彩。
