張偉傑（梁朝偉）在警界服務多年，屢建奇功，因此獲調派往嚴重罪案調查科。
傑辦案時認識了退隱江湖的車房老板邊城（高雄），兩人惺惺相惜，成為知己。惟城逼於情勢而重投黑社會，與傑為敵。
另方麵，傑的婚姻亦起風波，妻子葉巧宜（曾華倩）提出離婚，而清新可人的酒廊歌手程月如（鄧萃雯）此時闖進傑的生命中……
時兩大黑社會巨頭鄭康貴（光毅）、卓壽賢（鮑方）展開惡鬥，傑受命鏟除兩幫勢力，卻因而連累了宜……
一連串衝擊接踵而來，傑將如何麵對？
傑與程君澤及以卓壽賢為首的黑幫集團對抗。此時遇上被環境所迫要重入江湖的邊城，本來二人惺惺相惜。可是城卻成為賢的得力助手，致令二人分別在黑白兩道對 抗。
另一方麵，宜不滿傑常因工作而冷落自己，遂與傑冷戰，並提出離婚，傑不想失去宜，故答應宜一起到美國去。可是此時宜為救萍而慘死。
宜死後，傑遇上澤之妹酒廊歌手程月如及保險公司秘書方敏盈。三人並發生微妙的三角戀。
