故事梗概
　　1948年，北方解放。進步學生普刑天和他的戀人，黨的青年幹部吉林毅然決然地加入南下幹部團，走上了隨大軍南下，解放全中國的道路。在南下的路途中，與東北野戰軍，戰鬥英雄，營長魏九斤和蒙古支前隊長隊長，“小夥”青格爾相遇，由次開始了這四個年輕人伴隨年輕的共和國一起成長的經曆，以及四人的情感糾葛和深厚的友誼。

　　天不怕地不怕，在戰場上指揮有方，大智大勇，我行我素的魏九斤，贏得了普刑天的信任，成為了他革命的引路人；同時也贏得了吉林的愛慕，最終成為了她的愛人。執著追求理想，不倦堅持真理的普刑天也贏得了魏九斤的賞識，成為了他文化的教育者；同時與蒙族“小夥”青格爾的友誼在戰火中與日俱增，成為生死相依的“兄弟”。當革命勝利，褪去戎裝的青格爾竟是女兒身。大家驚呆了，原來那個在戰火中一同殺敵，在帳篷裏一同摟抱睡覺的戰友是個美麗的蒙族少女。他對青格爾的感情在悄然發生變化，在他的靈魂深入，連他自己都不曾分辨的情戀實際上是青格爾。當一切愛情障礙解除，二人可以相互表示內心的時候，青格爾卻選擇離開了自己最深愛的男人……
