Trees

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree;

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
 
Upon whose bosom snow has lain,
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

(1) prest: pressed的變體,為了與下麵一行最後一個詞breast押韻而采用。

(2) flowing breast: 相當於breast flowing with milk,解作"流出奶汁的乳房',用來比喻土壤的肥沃。

(3) leafy arms: 指葉子茂盛的樹枝

象一棵樹那樣優美的詩篇,

樹那饑渴的嘴唇緊緊貼住
大地乳汁甘美的胸脯,

它整天仰望著上帝,
舉起枝葉繁茂的手臂祈禱,

它那茂密如發的枝葉裏
夏天會築起知更鳥的安樂窩,

雪花飄落在它懷裏,
它同雨水親密無間。

詩歌出自我等愚人之手,
