好書推薦：“Between Shades of Gray” by Ruta Sepetys

90年代初蘇聯解體前後，突然常在新聞裏聽到立陶宛、愛沙尼亞、拉脫維亞這幾個國家的名字（合稱波羅地海三小國）。 1989年8月23日，正值臭名昭著的1939年‘蘇德互不侵犯條約’簽訂五十周年之際，三國人民約2百萬人手牽手連成一個跨越國界、長達600公裏的人鏈，參加人數達三國人口的40%，這就是著名的‘Baltic Way’人民長城。 此舉震撼全球，三國向世界宣告被蘇德出賣、被俄國攻占50年的曆史遭遇，傾訴追求獨立自由的呼聲。 6個月後，立陶宛成為首位宣告獨立的蘇聯加盟共和國，拉開了蘇聯解體的序幕，另外兩國和其他共和國也紛紛加以效仿。 當時我在台灣讀中學，新聞畫麵裏，麵對蘇俄坦克和大兵，立陶宛男女老幼牽手上街頭，勇敢而堅毅，連遠在台灣的我們都感同身受。 那時台灣的政治剛開放民主，本省人第一次有機會入政，全島陷入了政治狂熱，台獨的苗頭也開始往上竄。 立陶宛的和平獨立給了台灣一個莫大的鼓勵和啟示，眾人拍手稱快，連我家附近的紅茶店都改名叫‘立陶宛小館’。


 

作者Ruta Sepetys是立陶宛裔美國人，她的祖父和父親是二戰前期逃離立陶宛的難民。 從1939年到1945年短短六年間，波羅地海三小國先後被蘇聯、納粹德國和蘇聯三次入侵，每次亡國都伴隨著種族清洗，絕大部分社會精英和猶太人不是被屠殺就是被流放到集中營或者勞改營。 

描寫納粹迫害猶太人的作品不少，但關於東歐人民遭受斯大林政權奴役的作品卻十分罕見。 在斯大林的恐怖統治下，被淩虐枉死的冤魂高達2千萬，而其中受害最深但受人漠視的就是波羅地海三小國－－三國失去了整整三分之一的人口！ 數以百萬計的無辜平民，包括Ruta Sepetys的親人，被強行押解往西伯利亞勞改，家庭被拆散，其中一半人被折磨致死，少數幸存者一直到十幾年後才準許回國，但家園財產早已被俄人侵占，而且還繼續麵臨幾十年的蘇俄高壓統治。 

"Between Shades of Gray" 就是以立陶宛人這段慘痛曆史為背景，小說中的許多情節都是作者的親人們的親身經曆。

1941年，15歲的Lina和父母及10歲的弟弟住在立陶宛的Kaunas，一家人過著幸福安逸的生活。 但這一切在6月的一個晚上被粗暴的敲門聲擊得粉碎。 在大學任職的父親被關進監獄，而Lina與媽媽和弟弟被蘇俄秘密警察從被子裏揪出來抓走。 母子三人和一群同樣命運的同胞一起，宛如牲畜般地被趕上運貨牛羊的火車。 在暗無天日的悶罐車廂中度過了四十多天，每天隻有一桶水和一桶稀粥，地上一個孔洞用來做廁所，每天都有人病死在惡劣的環境中，屍體就被蘇俄官兵拋棄在車站。。。 最終這群不幸的人終於到達西伯利亞的阿爾泰勞改營，開始了慘無人道的勞改生活。

接下來麵對的是更艱苦的生存環境，草菅人命的蘇俄軍官，饑餓、嚴寒、疾病、辱罵、和非人承受的奴役苦工。。。每人每天隻有300克麵包的口糧，完全不夠填飽肚子。 麵對非人的待遇，這群人又該怎樣在是非顛倒的淤穢泥沼中保有人性的良知、生存的希望？ 是屈服於施暴者的淫威？ 出賣自己的靈魂和同伴而換取生存？ 是深植憤恨的種子，等待機會以牙還牙？ 是堅守自己的信仰和良心，即使對敵人仍心存慈悲？ 

Lina有著過人的繪畫天賦，她最喜歡挪威藝術家Edvard Munch，傾心於他筆下的真誠。 "Munch is primarily a lyric poet in color.  He feels colors, but does not see them.  Instead, he sees sorrow, crying, and withering."  在西伯利亞的每一天，sorrow, crying, and withering，就如Munch筆下的世界還原，在她的周圍活生生地上演。 Lina偷偷地用畫筆竭盡所能地見證這段暴行：那些絕望的苦楚麵容、失去親友的悲痛、無助的呐喊、恐懼之情、屈辱和悔恨、施暴者的邪惡嘴臉。。。也有同胞們的善良，在無邊苦難中仍熱烈的希望。。。人類最扭曲、最破碎、但也最真實的生命跡象，都被她忠實地記錄下來，用小罐子做成時間膠囊，期待有朝一日真相大白於天下，不容青史盡成灰！ 

因為頑固不肯承認莫須有的罪行，Lina一家被遣送到環境更為惡劣的北極。 他們搭建了簡陋的土屋，但沒有燃料和取暖設備，室內和室外一樣寒冷。 每天早上都有凍僵或者餓死、病死的屍體，但由於極地苦寒如石頭般堅硬，這些慘死的人甚至無法‘入土為安’，隻能被拋屍荒野，這是何等慘絕人寰的情境！

“Was it harder to die, or harder to be the one who survived?  I was sixteen, an orphan in Siberia, but I knew.  It was the one thing I never questioned.  I wanted to live.  I wanted to see my brother grow up.  I wanted to see Lithuania again.  I wanted to see Joana.  I wanted o smell the lily of the valley on the breeze beneath my window.  I wanted to paint in the fields.  I wanted to see Andrius with my drawings.  There were only two possible outcomes in Siberia.  Success meant survival.  Failure meant death.  I wanted life.  I wanted to survive.” 

Lina的媽媽Elena特別令人敬佩。 即使在最嚴酷的環境裏，她的善良和智慧，對孩子和所有人的愛，是那樣閃光。 媽媽的慈愛叫Lina在嚴冬仍然能看到希望和光明，“A tiny sliver of gold appeared between shades of gray on the horizon.” 

“Evil will rule until good men or women choose to act. This testimony was written to create an absolute record, to speak in a world where our voices have been extinguished.  These writings may shock or horrify you, but that is not my intention.  It is my greatest hope that the pages in this jar stir your deepest well of human compassion.  I hope they prompt you to do some thing, to tell someone.  Only then can we ensure that this kind of evil is never allowed to repeat itself.” 

故事中最令我感動的是立陶宛人的堅毅。 在耶誕前夜同胞們齊聚一堂，暢談各自的耶誕傳統，細訴溫馨的家園之愛，正是這樣相護相守的同胞之情支持著彼此度過日複一日的苦難。 Nina為了尋找父親，在手絹上繪畫立陶宛的國鳥、守護神和傳統刺繡圖案，還有人們在車廂中大合唱立陶宛國歌。。。立陶宛人對於國家的愛和認同，對於身為立陶宛人的驕傲，實在是太催淚！ 

讀了這本書，我才深深明白立陶宛的獨立和自由多麽不容易。 作者寫得很棒：

“Some wars are about bombing. For the people of the Baltics, this war was about believing. In 1991, after 50 years of brutal occupation, the three Baltic countries regained their independence, peacefully and with dignity. They chose hope over hate and showed the world that even through the darkest night, there is light.  Tell someone. These three tiny nations have taught us that love is the most powerful army. Whether love of friend, love of country, love of God, or even love of enemy - love reveals to us the truly miraculous nature of the human spirit.” 

"Between Shades of Gray"是作者第一本小說。 文字平白淺顯，說好聽是樸實無華，要挑剔就是不夠優美精致。 不過本書類別歸為‘青少年文學’，既然是給小朋友看的，就不要太苛求文筆了。 另外小說裏的回憶篇章相當多，多到有點煩，這也是我不太喜歡的。 雖然故事極其淒慘，但作者的筆觸敦厚溫柔，讀者也隨著Lina成長，從仇恨的枷鎖中掙脫升華為愛與寬恕，但絕不是遺忘。
