Her seclusion 隱居/i/was not the result of a failed love affair, but rather a part of a more general pattern of renunciation 放棄、斷絕、 through which she, in her quest for self-sovereignty自主權, carried on an argument with the Puritan /jue-i/ 清教徒 fathers, attacking with wit才智、風趣 and irony 冷嘲熱諷 their cheerless寡歡的 Calvinist 加爾文doctrine, their stern patriarchal 【、peitri'a:k l】God, and their rigid 呆板的 notions of "true  womanhood“.
