"The Flute Concerto in D minor was long known only in its version for harpsichord and strings (Wq. 22); it is only recently that the version with a flute as solo instrument, found in several sources, has come to notice, but this was undoubtedly also authorized by the composer, and indeed apparently constitutes the original form of the work. With its impetuous, brusque character, the piece is a typical example of the style of the Berlin School, one of the achievements of the 1740s, in the formulation of which C.P.E. Bach took a leading part. Wild, irascible gestures, sharp dynamic contrasts, abrupt changes of harmony, uncompromising virtuosity and a characteristically nervous pulse are the distinctive features of the fast outer movements, which frame a slow movement of rapt melancholy." - Peter Wollny
