人類曆史上的今天,發生了如下值得我關注的事件：

 

——1865

美國內戰結束

 

是日，美國密西西比河以西的邦聯部隊指揮官埃德蒙·科比·史密斯將軍簽署了聯邦談判人員提出的投降條款。隨著史密斯的投降，最後一支邦聯軍隊不複存在，正式結束了美國曆史上最血腥的四年。

 

這一事件被公認為內戰結束。

 

美國內戰始於1861年4月12日，當時皮埃爾·G·T·博雷加德將軍率領的邦聯岸上炮台向南卡羅來納州查爾斯頓港聯邦控製的薩姆特堡開火。在34小時內，50門邦聯炮和迫擊炮向供應不足的堡壘發射了4000多發炮彈。4月13日，聯邦駐軍指揮官羅伯特·安德森少校投降了。兩天後，美國亞伯拉罕·林肯總統發布公告，呼籲75,000名誌願士兵幫助平息南方的反叛。戰爭持續了四年，以邦聯被擊敗，美國聯邦政府得以生存，直至今日。這是美國曆史上最為血腥的戰事，總共損失了62萬聯邦和邦聯戰士。

 

編者按：美國聯邦在內戰中的勝利使得美國這個新生的合眾國家得以生存下來，隨後不斷發展壯大成為當今世界上唯一的超級大國，她左右世界局勢，影響人類進程與發展；沒有這場戰爭中北方聯邦的勝利，就沒有今天的美國，今天的世界格局會是完全不一樣的局麵。

這場戰爭的聯邦政府的勝利從而結束了美利堅合眾國建國伊始就撕裂著這個國家根基的奴隸製度。

 

American Civil War ends

In an event that is generally regarded as marking the end of the Civil War, Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith, commander of Confederate forces west of the Mississippi, signs the surrender terms offered by Union negotiators. With Smith’s surrender, the last Confederate army ceased to exist, bringing a formal end to the bloodiest four years in U.S. history.

The American Civil War began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate shore batteries under General Pierre G.T. Beauregard opened fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina’s Charleston Harbor. During 34 hours, 50 Confederate guns and mortars launched more than 4,000 rounds at the poorly supplied fort, and on April 13 U.S. Major Robert Anderson, commander of the Union garrison, surrendered. Two days later, U.S. President Abraham Lincolnissued a proclamation calling for 75,000 volunteer soldiers to help quell the Southern “insurrection.” Four long years later, the Confederacy was defeated at the total cost of 620,000 Union and Confederate dead.
