James Watson's controversial statements, particularly about race and intelligence, had significant professional and personal consequences. Over the years, Watson made multiple public remarks suggesting that Black people are inherently less intelligent than white people, a view widely discredited by scientific evidence and condemned as racist. In 2007, during a book tour, he stated that he was "inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa" because social policies were based on the mistaken belief that African intelligence was equal to that of others, which he disputed. These remarks sparked outrage and led to his removal from leadership roles at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), where he had been director and a prominent figure. Although initially allowed to retain honorary titles, he was eventually completely severed from CSHL in 2019 after reiterating similar views in a public documentary.

Watson also faced backlash for sexist comments, including dismissive remarks about women in science, and anti-Semitic statements. His comments damaged his reputation and estranged him from much of the scientific community, leading to lost positions on company boards and academic honors. In 2014, he even sold his Nobel Prize, stating that his controversial views made him an "unperson" in public and professional spheres.

The scientific community and institutions have repeatedly condemned Watson's views as lacking scientific support and harmful, emphasizing that intelligence differences observed in IQ testing are primarily attributed to environmental factors rather than genetics. His case remains a complex legacy of monumental scientific achievement overshadowed by persistent, socially divisive and scientifically unfounded opinions.[1][2][4][5][6]

Rosalind Franklin played a crucial and foundational role in the discovery of DNA's double helix structure through her expertise in X-ray crystallography. While working at King's College London, she produced the key X-ray diffraction images, especially the famous "Photo 51," which revealed the helical structure of DNA by capturing the B form of the molecule. Franklin's rigorous experimental approach involved controlling the hydration of DNA fibers to distinguish between the A and B forms and extensive mathematical analysis to derive structural insights. Her data provided the critical evidence that enabled James Watson and Francis Crick to build their accurate DNA model in 1953.

Despite her essential contributions, Franklin's role was historically underrecognized. Her X-ray diffraction images, shown to Watson without her permission, were pivotal to the model-building effort that earned Watson, Crick, and Maurice Wilkins the Nobel Prize in 1962. Franklin passed away in 1958 and was ineligible for the Nobel Prize posthumously, but her omission from formal recognition has sparked ongoing discussions about sexism in science and the fairness of credit distribution.

The controversy includes the perception that Rosalind Franklin was "robbed" of a Nobel Prize due to gender biases and lack of proper acknowledgment during her lifetime. She is now celebrated for her scientific excellence and as a symbol of women's contributions being historically marginalized in STEM fields, underscoring the broader issues of sexism raised by James Watson's related attitudes.[1][2][3][5][7]

But no one can dispute this fact – without Franklin’s X-ray photograph and research, it would have taken Watson, Crick, and Wilkins much longer to discover and model the structure of DNA. Her work was a turning point not only in the scientific quest to unravel the mystery of the structure of DNA but also in the use of X-ray diffraction itself. Her name should be on Watson and Crick’s papers, on the Nobel Prize that she deserved to be awarded, and in textbooks, so all people know the name Rosalind Franklin and how her contribution changed the course of scientific history.
