I only convince them: 1. this decision-making demands a serious study and thinking of a few Great Ideas; and 2. Dad is available to discuss with them if they couldn't find any better persons. My approach is based on my belief that this decision-making itself is a wonderful learning experience willing&able kids shouldn't miss.
