GOOGLE VOICE NUMBER

Can home phone numbers be ported to Google Voice?
According to Google, no. In their Number Porting FAQs here’s what they say. “Can a landline be ported at this time? No, we currently are unable to port landline numbers.”
That’s not exactly true though. Google cannot port a landline number directly, but it can be done. You can first port your home number to a mobile service and then to Google Voice.
I ported my Vonage number to an AT&T GoPhone. It requires no contract and only cost me $10, which included free 2-day shipping. During the purchase process you have the option to specify whether you want a new number or to port your current number. Once the phone arrived, I activated it, which completed the port process. I then immediately ported the number to Google Voice. I never bought any prepaid minutes for the GoPhone nor made any calls with it. Be sure to port the number to Google Voice right after the temporary mobile account has been setup. The reason is that Google has a verification process, which is required before the port can be completed. They call the number you are trying to port. You must answer and enter a 2-digit code they display on-screen. If you do it quick enough it will ring your old phone, in my case it rang the Vonage phone. That way you never have to add minutes to the prepaid phone. If for some reason it doesn’t work that smooth for you, the worst case scenario would be having to add a few minutes. The verification call takes just 10 seconds. Google does charge a one-time fee of $20 for number porting.
