有關移民政策改革的消息

By Jan Krasny 現時已被參院參院的 Immigration Reform bill仍在接受國會的審核，而布什總統也再次表明他對這次移民改革的支持以及對一些非法移民問題的看法。以下為有關信息： While visiting at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, President Bush reaffirmed his support for a comprehensive approach to immigration reform. While recognizing the burden that illegal immigration has on local communities, putting a strain on public school and local budgets, he also reminded everyone “immigrants have been one of the great strengths of the Unites States of America.” He stated that progress was being made and promised to work with Congress to correct the current immigration problems, and “to pass a comprehensive bill” into law. Specifically President Bush addressed the provisions regarding a temporary worker visa program, which he viewed as an important part of securing the borders by making people feel that they do not have to illegally enter the U.S. for work. He stated that until such a program is available, stopping people from illegally entering U.S. would be impossible. He went on to discuss the importance of a path towards citizenship for people who have been present and working in the U.S. for several years, but stated that he is against amnesty in general. In closing President Bush stressed the importance of upholding “the great American tradition of the melting pot,” and reiterated that if we do not have a comprehensive approach then nothing is going to be solved at all. The Senate passed a Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill recently and the discussion on the issue will happen shortly in conference committee. The House of Representatives bill that addresses some of the immigration issues is focused mainly on enforcement and does not address issues such as a temporary worker program and a path to citizenship for current undocumented workers. The Senate bill includes provisions that would increase the number of H-1B visas and green cards available to highly skilled employees.
