Immigration and the State of the Union By: Beth Robertie, Esq., Associate George W. Bush, President of the United States , addressed Congress last night in the State of the Union address. In it, he spotlighted the importance of immigration in these election year politics by reaffirming the Republican platform of more immigration enforcement and border protection and called for a “humane guest worker program that rejects amnesty.” As many of you probably know, the Republicans in Congress and the White House are supporting a guest worker program that allows for a limited term of authorized work for applicants with no opportunity to adjust status to that of permanent resident. The Democrat’s response, given by Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, highlighted the “confusing patchwork of state and local efforts” to enact and control immigration laws in light of the federal government’s failure to implement and enforce a rational and comprehensive immigration policy. Governor Kaine encouraged lawmakers to “welcome those who seek to lawfully join and contribute to our American family,” while simultaneously dealing with homeland defense and border protection. Given that this is an election year for Congress, watch for more developments on the immigration legislation front. Immigration promises to be a hot-button issue in this election as well as the presidential election of 2008.
